What's the difference between Premium and Standard Grade Pellets?

The grade of pellets is determined by its ash content. Ash content determines the grade because of its role in maintenance frequency. The higher the ash content, the more you have to clean.

Higher ash content is usually derived from materials which result in more residual ash, such as chips containing tree bark (which contains more impurities) or agricultural residues like nut hulls. The type of trees used in pellets can also affect ash content - for example, western softwoods have less ash than eastern hardwoods.

The good news is that stove manufacturers are now making stoves that efficiently burn lower grades pellets. The size of the ash drawer, fuel feed and grate design, proper venting, correct operation and maintenance all play a part in maintenance frequency. Therefore, consumers can now wisely purchase the less expensive, more readily available standard grade pellets and have great, long-term results.
